A fellow over on the RC Universe forums shared his converting a new Extreme Flight Vanquish to a gasser

He chopped off the nose and fitted a PTE 36 gas motor on it, and it flies great! Its quiet as it is on the pipe, but I am certain that it could be even more quiet if a guy wanted to get crazy.






This is neat because gas engines really have yet to hit the pattern scene. I am really interested in this, because how great would it be for a pattern plane to have all the pull you could need and only need to worry about the gallon of gas every month or so

I'd worry about airframe integrity. I don't think the model is designed to take the vibration of the gas motor. While I do agree that gas might be an iteresting avenue to pursue for pattern, I think I'd look at a different airframe for it. There was a competitor out of the tri-cities that ran a gasser for a brief time, he' back to big two stroke nitros now. Not sure why.

Alan, your absolutely correct. This particular conversion was done by a very capable builder that has modified the airframe enough to take the vibrations. How long it will hold up remains to be seen, although I expect it to hold up quite well.

In the build thread, he shows his own creation of a soft mount similar to the Hyde mount, and various other modifications to the airframe for the gas application. The flight reports have shown that the OS GT33 engine has more than enough power, and even mentioned it being more so than the YS 170

I am certain that if done right, and treated right, it could last as long as the designed electric application.

Anyways, I am not really speaking on this because I am looking to convert a Vanquish myself. Really more of an eye opener to some of us, that the gas motor has not really even been a serious discussion in the pattern world that I have witnessed. I am curious about why that is, more than anything else.

Oops, I mentioned it having the OS GT33, when he actually used the PTE 36. However, he has a large thread on RCU where he has taken the OS GT33 and put it to the test for pattern applications with excellent results.
