Oliver and I went on vacation to Virginia and flew my grandfather's old Goldberg Piper J3 Cub, which has flown a handful of times in two decades. We flew at the Fredericksburg Aeromasters site, which was a nice grass field. The members there told us that on that same very day there was an event called "Warbirds Over Fredericksburg" at the Fredericksburg Area R/C Club about 20 miles away. There were rumors of the famous Mac Hodges giant B-29 being contracted to perform at the event.
The B-29 has a wingspan of about 20 feet and is powered by four DA-100's, (twin cylinder 100cc 2-stroke gasoline engines). The plane takes a model of the X-1, which Chuck Yeager used to break the sound barrier, up to altitude and releases it. The X-1 is controlled by a different pilot as it glides down to the runway. It pitches up suddenly and ignites a rocket motor, which propels it upward very quickly. The X-1 lands, and the B-29 is then seen doing a flat spin with one engine smoking. It does several not-so-scale maneuvers that are VERY impressive.
We also visited both of the Air & Space museums, (downtown DC and at Dulles Airport).
If you have the chance, I encourage everyone to search for Mac Hodges and his plane on Youtube and check out the performance he does. I took some video and will post it on my own Youtube channel sometime in June. Here are some pictures that we took.
