ERCA January 27, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm at Abby’s Pizza, River Road; adjourned 8:38 pm

Announcements:

Al Barrington introduced prospective member Braton Jurasevich, in abstentia, who was voted a member

  • Al introduced Major Roxanne Cole, spokesperson for Civil Air Patrol Mahlon Sweet Composite Squadron. An offer was extended to provide ERCA Flight Instructors to train CAP pilots on the Squadron’s RC glider.

Treasurer Report: Current bank balance is $7,628.52

Safety Report: No report

Old business:

Discussion of the field, sprinkler system and covering postponed until new lease signed

  • Monster Fest was discussed by Mike Winklepleck (event chair) and Brad Werneth (CDC)

A motion to hold the event was passed unanimously

Preferred date is August 21, 22 and 23

Pat Willis will assist

Mike expects to have available about $1,000 in raffle donations

Aerobeez, Red Wing RC and Aeroworks will support the event

Mike anticipates the event to be pilot orientated

Suggestion was made to ask the “pro” pilots conduct seminars

Suggestion was made to promote a Saturday night pilots dinner and night-fly

New business:

ERCA 2015 budget proposal was passed unanimously

  • Mike Burgess offered tillings from his pond enlargement project for use improving the field. ERCA cost estimated at $500. Discussion tabled until new lease is signed.

ERCA  February 24, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 7:21 pm at Abby’s Pizza, River Road; adjourned 8:04 pm

Announcements:

•    Al Barrington introduced prospective member Kurt Hiner who was voted a member
•    Al introduced Cory, a prospective member who took a membership application

Treasurer Report:  Current bank balance is $7,836.52

Old business:

•    Brad Werneth requested a discussion of the field summer irrigation
David will set the irrigation on Monday evenings and retrieve it Tuesday morning
Arrangements need to be made for the second weekly setting
Brad recommended aeration and liming
Roger mentioned he saw signs of aeration already done
A motion to purchase lime for the field was passed unanimously
•    Mel suggested sand be applied to the field for leveling and drainage enhancement
Brad and Casey volunteered to check into obtaining sand

New business:

•    Roger has been contacted by a pilot getting out of the hobby who may donate items to the club for a fund raiser
•    Roger welcomed Dale Williams to the meeting

ERCA  March 24, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 7:16 pm at Abby’s Pizza, River Road; adjourned 8:01 pm

Announcements:

•    Al Barrington will have a display at the April 18th meeting of the Fern Ridge Christian Church

Treasurer Report:      Current bank balance is $8,082.22

Old business:

•    Roger Dahl reported 7 bags of agricultural lime were applied to the field, mostly on the west end of the runway.
•    Rod Madison has recommended to Roger Dahl that loam instead of sand be used to level the field.  Rod volunteered to aid in the formulation of field improvements.
•    Sprinkler system upgrade was discussed.
•    Frank Blain recommended that a detailed plan of action be formulated and voted on for improvements to the field.
•    An informational vote was made regarding grass versus Geo-Tech.  Grass was overwhelmingly favored.

New business:

•    Mickey suggested the field facilities need a work party cleanup.  Discussion ensued but no decisions were made.

•    Ian Berner presented his F-15 balsa kit which he is working on.
•    Frank Blain presented his ready-to-fly Hughes H-1 racer.

ERCA  April 28, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 7:07 pm at Abby’s Pizza, River Road; adjourned 7:47 pm

Announcements:

•    Jim Corbett announced the Creswell RC Flyers annual Swap & Shop will be held May 16th @ the Creswell Community Center

Treasurer Report:      Current bank balance is $8,641.50

Old business:

•    Brad Wermeth presented a proposed field sprinkler system prepared by John Deere Irrigation Supply.  Parts and equipment expense estimated @ about $3,500.
•    Roger Dahl reported the new lease is being prepared for consideration.
•    Mike Winkleplek updated Monster Fest preparations.  Red Wing RC has agreed to sponsor the event and donate about $650 in prizes.  6 other companies are interested in sponsoring. Mike estimates about $1,500 in prizes will be donated by the sponsors.

New business:

•    Rod Madison will aerate the field and deliver fertilizer this week or next
•    Brad Wermeth made a motion to spend $1,150 and 1 case of beer for 36 yards of sand, aeration, fertilizer and purchase of a sand applicator machine.
•    Mike Winkleplek volunteered to run the Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) Fun Fly.

ERCA  May 26, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 7:04 pm at Abby’s Pizza, River Road; adjourned 7:41 pm
15 members and 4 guests present.

Announcements:
•    Roger Dahl reviewed the Memorial Day Fun Fly.
•    Al Barrington introduced Ken and Lilly Chikasuge.  Ken was voted in as a new member.
•    Robin Wood was also voted in as a new member.
•    Roger Dahl reported about 40 yards (4 truck loads) of sand were purchased for the field and most has been applied.

Treasurer Report:      Current bank balance is $7,942.32
Club membership is 72, not counting Ken (73rd) and Robin (74th.)

•    The status of the new field lease was discussed.  Roger wants to meet with the land owner to precisely define the payment terms.
•    Roger Dahl reported the irrigation upgrade proposal is being worked on.
•    Jim Corbett volunteered to be the field maintenance coordinator.

New business:

•    The definition of “potluck” was discussed.
•    Mike Winkleplek needs Monster Fest volunteers.
•    Jim Corbett announced that Len Stolfo volunteered to produce a video of the Monster Fest

Show and Tell:

•    Frank Blain discussed his method of making scale-size rivet graphics with the help of Hien Williams, owner of The Graphics Shop.  He brought in the 65” wing of his P-51 project and graphic rivets he had printed.
•    Dave Carlstom offered lead plates to members.

ERCA  June 23, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 7:06 pm at Carl Henson Field; adjourned 7:54 pm
22 members present.

Announcements:
•    Roger Dahl reported donation of $750 from his sale of items donated by Dave Bennett Sr., Mickey Cohen and Roger at the Creswell Swap & Fly.
•    The Black Berry Jam Festival float fly will be in July at Dexter Lake

Old business:

•    The terms of the new field lease was discussed.  The discussion centered on the concept of an annual adjustment of the lease amount based on end of the preceding year membership count.
Base lease mentioned by Mike to be $1,500 per year.
Annual adjustment:    If, as of December 31 of the preceding year, membership is
100 or more, ERCA would pay lease an additional sum.  Mike mentioned $500,
Or,
If, as of December 31 of the preceding year, membership is 60 or less, ERCA would be credited an amount to determined by adjusting the base amount.

The president asked the Secretary to prepare a proposal.

•    Roger Dahl opened the discussion of the irrigation upgrade.

Jim Corbett said he determined the existing pump rate at 26.5 gpm.
He also determined an installation of 4 heads would require 26 gpm.  He estimated it would take 4 zones of 4 heads each to irrigate the runway.
He is making preparations to clean the existing 1 ½” suction pipe and the 2” casing by removing both for evaluation and possible replacement.
He also proposed that the club hold fund raisers to cover at least $1,500 of his estimated $3,000 material cost.

It was suggested that decisions be made in order to start the installation after the Monster Fest.

•    The Field Maintenance Coordinator reported 4 members have volunteered to move irrigation sprinklers for the summer.  2 members have volunteered as backup.  Casey volunteered to help.

Jim mentioned the bleacher seats need painting and the P.A. system checked out, especially the speakers (also the wireless microphone he obtained) prior to Monster Fest.

New Business:

•    $275 was authorized to repair Mike Burgess’s ATV transmission which ERCA damaged.

•    Members are requested to submit 2016 meeting location ideas.

•    The spreader roof needs to be covered with roofing material, a wind-break installed on the north side, and auger anchor(s) be installed.

•    Al reminded everyone to bring ice to the field meetings to cool refreshments

•    Lease:  Roger will get with Mike this week.

•    Irrigation upgrade:  Roger and Jim Corbett will meet with the manager of John Deere irrigation prior to next meeting.

Well depth is 21 feet
Club pump is rated for 25 feet

8 members have volunteered to move the irrigation system this summer.

•    Next year meeting location suggestion:  New Harrisburg church.

•    Monster Fest update by Brad Wermeth:
Brad is using last year’s organization document to organize upcoming event
$60 was authorized to replace 6 sound system speakers
3 food vendors have shown interest
Lou, land owner to the south, will be asked to move electric sheep fence
Mike Burgess will coordinate with his farm tenant work on adjoining property
A member agreed to have 1 additional porta-potty on site for the event
Brad will hold a meeting on Sunday, August 16 @ 9:00am for all volunteers
Dorman Construction has agreed to provide lighting @ no charge
Smoking will be allowed only in vehicles
Directional signs will be set up by Roger
Jeff volunteered to provide a quiet electrical generator for the event.

•    Spreader lean-to:  paint green after all work is done.

Meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm at Carl Hensen Field; adjourned 8:13 pm

Announcements:

•    Al reported gross income from the Monster Fest is $1,427
$710 pilot fees
$610 raffle proceeds
$107 concession proceeds
($10 donated for transfer to the Wounded Warrior Project club donation)

Old business:
•    Lease:  Roger and Mike have discussed the lease.  It should be signed by next meeting.
•    Irrigation upgrade:  lengthy discussion ensued to determine when and how the field should be upgraded.  It was suggested that leveling the field be performed prior to installation of irrigation components and professional assistance be sought.  A   committee of Jim Corbett, JR Graham and Mike Burgess was formed.

New business:
•    Allan Martin was voted in as a new member
•    Motion was made and passed to donate $300 to AMA Wound Warrior Project fund
•    An informal Labor Day Fun Fly/swap meet will be held September 7th
•    Brad Wermeth made a presentation regarding a possible 2016 Monster Fest.  He, Pat Willis and Mike Burgess talked amongst themselves to co-coordinate the event if the club decides to hold the event.  The following ideas were suggested/discussed:
o    Larger and more ads in the AMA Magazine
o    Hold the event same weekend as the Scandinavian Festival
o    Make the event “invitational” i.e. send invitations directly to pilots
o    Hold flight demonstrations and exhibitions; buddy boxes; instructor T-shirts
o    Jim Corbett conducted a poll at this year’s event and determined most spectators heard of the event by word of mouth
o    Len Stolfo volunteered to approach his media contacts about the event

Old business:

•    5-year lease signed by Roger Dahl and Mike Burgess was unanimously approved by club membership.
•    The irrigation and field improvement projects were discussed:

1.    Roger Dahl and Jim Corbett met with manager of John Deere Irrigation:
He made the following suggestions
a.    2 side lines and a center line are needed for uniform coverage.
b.    He recommended to minimally disturb the soil when leveling the runway.
c.    He estimated cost of irrigation components to be about $6,000.
2.    Cost of a new pump estimated at about $1,000.
3.    Minimum water flow for a new system is 30 gpm.
4.    Jim Corbett is digging a 2nd well about 5 feet from the existing well in an attempt to increase water flow.
5.    Jim got an estimate from a well driller to drill a 30’ well:  $2,800.

Decision was made to increase the flow of the well to about 30 gpm (existing well delivers about 26 gpm) before proceeding with the upgrade.

New Business:

•    There will be a work party Saturday, October 3rd.  Jim Corbett will coordinate and promulgate tool requirements by email.
•    Motion to purchase one roll 15’ x 300’ of Geo-Tech was passed.
•    Roger asked for members for ideas to raise money for the field improvements.
•    Nominations for 2016 officers will be made at the next meeting.

Meeting was called to order at 7:06 pm at Arby’s Pizza, River Road; adjourned 7:47 pm

Announcements:  Jim Corbett thanked the summer irrigation crew for their work this summer.

Old business:

•    Jim gave an update on drilling of the second well.

1.    Depth at this time is 15.5 feet
2.    Produces about 0.8 gpm
3.    Since the rains started water level is 9 feet (up from 11 feet.)
4.    Work will continue until well depth is 18 to 21 feet, then flow rate will be determined and a decision to proceed with installing new irrigation system will be made.  Minimum flow rate is 30 gpm.

•    Decision was made to apply 2 truckloads of additional sand to the runway.  Question arose as to apply mason or green sand.

New Business:

•    ERCA received a notice from AMA recommending the club sign an agreement with the local FAA administrator regarding the model radio control operations at the field.  Roger has an appointment to meet with the administrator Thursday, October 29.

•    Jim gave an update on field issues:

1.    Well #2 depth is 18 feet, flow is about 5 gpm, and 3 more feet.
2.    The two truckloads of sand will be applied next spring.
3.    An area is being prepared for GeoTech covering next spring.

•    Roger met with the Mahlon Sweet airport manager and an agreement was signed regarding Carl Hensen field.

New Busiiness:

•    Youth member, Brendan Van Ryzin was approved as a new member:

•    Al held an auction and sold the last three ERCA T-shirts

Show and Tell:  Ian Berner brought his RC truck with trailer to tow his airplanes and Frank Blain brought in new landing gear.
